Each chess piece in the African animal chess set is an African animal. King and queen are the lion and lioness of course. Rhinos, elephants, water buffalo, and hippos make up the rest of the chess set.

The board is a box type to hold the pieces, but this chess set is at its best on display. Each animal chess piece is hand carved. The board is hand made from several types of wood ad polished for a nice, clean look. African animal chess pieces are made from two different kinds of wood, one nearly black, and the other a brown.

This is a decorative chess set, but is easily sturdy enough to be played anytime without worry.
