African elephant herds can be dangerous. We came up behind a herd of about thirty with several calves. We kept our distance and watched - they were blocking the road ahead. After about twenty minutes we began to back out to turn around and coming up behind us was another twenty or so also with calves. Stuck between nearly 60 elephants with babies in a small van is not a very comfortable expirience. Eventually they wandered off to the river. Had we been in their path, we could have easily been moved out of the way any way they choose.
